Is the Honda Plus Extended Warranty Worth It?
When the plan can be worth it, and when it may not be. The short answer: it is worth it for some owners and not for others.

Is the Honda Plus extended warranty worth it?
The Honda Plus extended warranty is worth it for some owners and not for others. It depends on three things: how long you will keep the vehicle, how many kilometres you drive, and how much an unexpected repair bill would hurt your budget.
Honda Plus is the extended warranty presented by Honda Canada on its website and available through Honda dealers. New to it? Start with what Honda Plus is.
An extended warranty can protect you from a large, unplanned bill for a covered repair. In our view, it is not a way to save money, and no one can promise you will ever use it. We give no average repair cost: we have not found one with a source.
The facts about Honda Plus here come from Honda Canada’s pages and price list. Other sources are named where we cite them. The examples and the opinions are our own.
This site is about the Honda Plus Extended Warranty for Canadian models of Honda cars, SUVs, minivans and trucks. Prices are in Canadian dollars and distances in kilometres.
What does Honda Plus add to the factory warranty?
Honda’s factory warranty gives you 3 years / 60,000 km of basic coverage and, on gas and hybrid models, 5 years / 100,000 km on the powertrain. Honda Plus runs up to 8 years / 200,000 km, whichever comes first. Plan terms include the factory warranty, so “8 years” means 8 years of total coverage counted from delivery, not 8 extra years on top.
| Coverage | Years / kilometres |
|---|---|
| Factory warranty, basic | 3 years / 60,000 km |
| Factory warranty, powertrain (gas and hybrid models) | 5 years / 100,000 km |
| Honda Plus extended warranty | Up to 8 years or 200,000 km, whichever comes first. A 10-year / 160,000 km plan is also offered. |
Kilometres can end a warranty before years do
Distance can matter more than owners expect. Drive 25,000 km a year, for example, and you reach 60,000 km in about 2.4 years, before the three years are up, so the basic warranty ends on distance, not time. At 20,000 km a year, both limits arrive together at three years. That is an example, not a statistic.
Honda Plus moves those limits out, up to 8 years / 200,000 km depending on the plan. It still ends at whichever limit you reach first.

Which Honda Plus terms should you weigh?
Five terms to read before you decide: the deductible, the transfer, cancellation, roadside assistance and trip interruption. None of them can tell you whether you will need the plan.

Costs that arrive at the wrong moment
A repair bill can be harder to absorb when you are far from home and the trip is the plan. The terms below sum up what Honda publishes: what you pay for a covered repair, what happens if you sell or change your mind, and the help planned for the road.
-
Deductible
$0 deductible on a covered component breakdown. There is no deductible on roadside assistance either. Honda Plus does not pay for repairs the contract excludes. The legal warranties may still apply.
-
Transfer
Transferable under most conditions, at no cost. The transfer happens automatically when the Honda factory warranty is transferred to the new owner. If you move elsewhere in Canada, your coverage remains valid.
-
Cancellation
30 days
Cancel for any reason within 30 days of the plan purchase date for a 100% refund, through the Honda dealer. In Quebec, this term is in addition to your 10-day legal right. Honda’s public pages do not say what applies after 30 days. Ask your advisor for the Service Provision.
-
Roadside assistance
Roadside assistance, 24/7, is extended at no extra cost.
-
Trip interruption
$500
Total limit per incident, less any car-rental reimbursement you receive. It applies when a breakdown happens more than 100 km from home.
When is Honda Plus not worth it?
Honda Plus may not be worth it if you will sell or trade the vehicle before its factory warranty ends, would rather set money aside, or drive very little. In those cases, skipping it is a sensible choice.
You will sell or trade soon. If you part with the vehicle while the factory warranty still runs, a plan has little time to matter. Free transfer, under most conditions, helps, but we would not buy a plan for that alone.
You would rather self-insure. If you can absorb a large bill without stress, a repair fund is a fair choice. You keep the money if nothing breaks, and you pay for any repair no warranty covers.
You drive very little. The plan ends by time, counted from delivery, whether or not you reach the kilometre limit. Ask how many years would remain for your vehicle.
How can you tell if Honda Plus is worth it for you?
Check eligibility first, then answer four questions about your own situation. Mostly “yes” means a quote is worth asking for. Mostly “no” means you can reasonably skip it. A mix is a close call, and an advisor can talk it through with you.
Honda’s rule, not a reading from your vehicle.
First, check that your vehicle qualifies. Canadian models up to 5 model years old and under 100,000 km. Both conditions must be met. If it does not, skip the questions below. Check how much coverage your vehicle has left.
Model years 2022 and 2023 require a Honda Plus Inspection. Above 100,000 km, Honda’s price list refers to a separate list for used vehicles. Ask your advisor what applies.
- Will you keep the vehicle beyond its factory warranty?
- The longer you keep it after the limits in the table above, the more a plan can matter.
- Do kilometres, not years, end your warranty first?
- If you drive a lot, distance is your limit.
- Would a large, unplanned repair bill be hard to absorb?
- If so, protection set in advance has more value. If not, setting money aside is a fair alternative.
- Do roadside assistance and trip interruption matter to you?
- Think of long drives, or a family member driving far from home. See what roadside assistance includes.
Not sure how your answers add up? Ask for a quote: an advisor contacts you and can talk it through. You can ask to see the Service Provision before you buy.
Does timing matter?
Honda Plus is counted from your vehicle’s original delivery date at 0 km, not from the day you buy the plan. Waiting does not move your coverage forward: an 8-year plan still ends 8 years after delivery, or at its km limit, whichever comes first. Honda also recommends buying when you acquire the vehicle.
- Basic factory warranty: 3 years / 60,000 km
- Powertrain: 5 years / 100,000 km
- Honda Plus: up to 8 years / 200,000 km
Example only, not a quote: on an 8-year / 200,000 km plan, a vehicle that is already 3 years and 60,000 km old has at most 5 years / 140,000 km of Honda Plus coverage left.
