How long is the Honda factory warranty in Canada?
A new Honda in Canada comes with 3 years / 60,000 km of basic coverage and, on gasoline and hybrid models, 5 years / 100,000 km on the powertrain, whichever comes first.
Some items run longer: the hybrid system and EV battery (8 years / 160,000 km, on hybrid models and electric vehicles only) and rust perforation (5 years, no distance limit). Terms vary by item, and the warranty guide for your vehicle lists them all.
The Honda warranty in Canada has two main parts: basic coverage and the powertrain warranty. Each one ends at whichever limit you reach first, years or kilometres. Rust perforation and roadside assistance end by time only.
Two examples, not statistics. A driver who covers 25,000 km a year passes 60,000 km before the end of year three, so the kilometres end the basic coverage first. A driver who covers 12,000 km a year has about 36,000 km at the three-year mark, so for that driver the years run out first.
Honda Plus is counted another way: it is counted from your vehicle’s original delivery date, at 0 km, whenever you buy the plan.
Honda’s factory warranty at a glance
The main items in Honda’s standard warranty, with the term for each. Basic coverage and the powertrain end at whichever limit comes first. Rust perforation and roadside assistance end by time only.
| Coverage | Years | Kilometres | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic coverage | 3 | 60,000 | Examples from Honda’s comparison: climate control, brakes, electrical, steering… The warranty guide lists everything. |
| Powertrain | 5 | 100,000 | Gasoline and hybrid models: the powertrain components listed in your warranty guide |
| Hybrid system and EV battery | 8 | 160,000 | Hybrid models and electric vehicles only |
| Rust perforation | 5 | No distance limit | Rust that eats through the metal |
| Roadside assistance | 3 | No distance limit | The standard roadside services Honda lists, such as towing and lockout service |
This table shows the main items. The warranty guide for your vehicle lists every item with its exact terms.

When does the Honda warranty expire?
Once a factory warranty ends, Honda no longer pays for the repairs it covered. The legal warranties may still apply: see the notice concerning legal warranties.
- At 3 years / 60,000 km, basic coverage ends.
- Honda no longer pays for repairs to the systems it covered, such as climate control, brakes, electrical and steering. Factory roadside assistance runs for 3 years, no distance limit, so it ends at the three-year mark whatever the kilometres.
- At 5 years / 100,000 km, the Honda powertrain warranty in Canada ends.
- Honda no longer pays for powertrain repairs. Rust perforation coverage runs for 5 years, no distance limit, so it ends at year five whatever the kilometres.
- At 8 years / 160,000 km, the hybrid system and EV battery terms end.
- This applies to hybrid models and electric vehicles only. Our hybrid and EV guide explains what Honda Plus covers on those models.
The car does not change when a warranty ends. What Honda pays for does. For the components it covers, Honda Plus keeps coverage going after the factory dates, and its plan terms include the factory years, as the timeline below shows.
Can I buy Honda Plus after the factory warranty expires?
Honda’s published rules for Honda Plus are about the model, the model year and the kilometres. They say nothing about the factory warranty still being in effect. Canadian models up to 5 model years old and under 100,000 km. Both conditions must be met. Model years 2022 and 2023 require a Honda Plus Inspection. If your Honda meets these rules, you can ask for a quote after the factory warranty has ended. Your advisor confirms what applies to your vehicle.
In practice, the kilometre limits line up. The powertrain warranty ends at 5 years / 100,000 km, whichever comes first, and Honda Plus requires a vehicle under 100,000 km. Above 100,000 km, Honda’s price list refers to a separate list for used vehicles. Ask your advisor what applies.

Honda’s rule, not a reading from your vehicle. Up to 5 model years and under 100,000 km.
When should I decide?
Honda Plus is counted from your vehicle’s original delivery date at 0 km, not from the day you buy it, so waiting does not move your coverage forward. If your factory coverage is ending, you can still ask for a quote while your vehicle is within Honda’s limits. What changes with time is how much of the plan remains, because the plan ends at a set time after delivery, or at its kilometre limit.
- Basic factory warranty: 3 years / 60,000 km
- Powertrain: 5 years / 100,000 km
- Honda Plus: up to 8 years / 200,000 km
Example only, not a quote: on an 8-year / 200,000 km plan, a vehicle that is already 3 years and 60,000 km old has at most 5 years / 140,000 km of Honda Plus coverage left.
- A Honda Plus plan of
- 8 years
- or
- 200,000 km
Up to 8 years or 200,000 km, whichever comes first. A 10-year / 160,000 km plan is also offered. Plan terms include the factory warranty, so “8 years” means 8 years of total coverage counted from delivery, not 8 extra years on top.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard Honda warranty in Canada?
It is the warranty Honda includes with a new vehicle. Its two main parts are basic coverage, 3 years / 60,000 km, and the powertrain, 5 years / 100,000 km, whichever comes first. The warranty guide for your vehicle lists every item and its terms.
Does the powertrain warranty apply to an electric Honda?
Honda lists the standard warranty of electric vehicles in a separate table, and that table has no powertrain line. The high-voltage battery of an electric vehicle is covered for 8 years / 160,000 km. The warranty guide for your vehicle sets out what applies.
The hybrid and EV guide explains how Honda Plus treats the battery.
