Honda Plus vs a Third-Party Extended Warranty: What Is Different?

Honda Plus is the extended warranty Honda Canada presents on its website. Companies not affiliated with Honda offer extended warranties too. Here are the questions to ask when you compare, whoever the provider is.

The eight questions work for any provider. The Honda Plus answers are based on what Honda Canada publishes on its website and in its price list.

What is the difference between Honda Plus and a third-party extended warranty?

Honda Plus is the extended warranty presented by Honda Canada on its website and available through Honda dealers. A third-party extended warranty is a contract offered by a company that is not affiliated with Honda. The two can differ in who issues it, when the term starts, where you repair, which parts are used and what you pay per claim.

The simplest way to compare is one point at a time, contract in hand. This page names no other company and makes no claim about their contracts: it gives the questions to ask, and what Honda publishes for Honda Plus.

Magog Honda, a Honda dealership of Groupe Olivier, offers Honda Plus. We are not a neutral observer, so ask us the same questions.

When the term starts
Repair coverage is counted from your vehicle’s original delivery date, at 0 km, whenever you buy the plan.

Where you repair, and what the contract names

Two of the five differences, as they show up on the day you need a repair.

Where the repair happens

Ask any provider who chooses the repair shop, and whether you pay for the repair before you are reimbursed.

Honda Plus. For a covered repair, have the vehicle taken to the Honda dealer of your choice. Outside Canada, you pay for the repair first, then contact your selling dealership about reimbursement of eligible claims. Your coverage remains valid if you move within Canada.

What the contract names

Ask which parts the contract names, in writing: new manufacturer parts, equivalent parts or used parts, and who will do the repair.

Honda Plus. Honda parts and Honda-trained technicians, according to Honda.

Eight questions to ask about any extended warranty

Eight questions cover the essentials: who issues it, when the term starts, where you can repair, which parts are used, what you pay per claim, transfer, cancellation and exclusions. Ask them of every provider, in writing, before you pay.

Eight questions for any provider, with what Honda publishes for Honda Plus, and what we add.
Question What to ask Honda Plus: what Honda publishes, and what we add
Who issues the contract? Which company issues the contract, and which pays an approved claim? Honda Plus is the extended warranty presented by Honda Canada on its website and available through Honda dealers. You can ask to see the Service Provision before you buy.
When does the term start? From the day you buy or from the vehicle’s first delivery? From 0 km or from today’s odometer? The coverage period starts on the date of the vehicle’s Retail Delivery Report (its original delivery date) and at 0 km, whenever you buy the plan.
Where can I have it repaired? Any shop, a list of approved shops, or one network? Do you pay first? For a covered repair, have the vehicle taken to the Honda dealer of your choice. Territory: Canada and the continental U.S. Outside Canada, you pay for the repair first, then contact your selling dealership about reimbursement of eligible claims. Your coverage remains valid if you move within Canada.
Which parts are used? Manufacturer, equivalent or used parts? Is it written in the contract? Honda parts and Honda-trained technicians, according to Honda.
What do I pay per claim? A deductible, per visit or per repair? A limit per claim? $0 deductible on a covered component breakdown.
Can I transfer it? Can the next owner keep the plan? With what fees? Honda states that the plan is transferable under most conditions, at no cost. The transfer happens automatically when the Honda factory warranty is transferred to the new owner.
Can I cancel, and what do I get back? Is there a full-refund window? After it, how is the refund worked out? Cancel for any reason within 30 days of the plan purchase date for a 100% refund, through the Honda dealer. In Quebec, this term is in addition to your 10-day legal right. Honda’s public pages do not say what applies after 30 days. Ask your advisor for the Service Provision.
What are the limits and exclusions? Can you read the whole contract before paying? What is excluded, and what maintenance keeps the plan in effect? Maintain your vehicle as Honda recommends in the owner’s manual to keep the plan in effect.

Take the list with you

The Honda Plus contract sets out the plan’s terms, limits and exclusions. Ask your advisor to explain them before you commit. This page covers only some of them. Why two prices are not directly comparable

Two prices are only comparable when they buy the same thing. Before you compare, work out the cost per remaining year of coverage, what each plan caps, and when its term starts. This is a method, not a claim: it works the same way for every provider, including Honda Plus.

Count the coverage you will really have. From the start date to the end date or kilometre limit, whichever comes first.

Note what is capped. Limits per claim or in total, and any deductible.

Check when the term starts. From the day you buy, or from first delivery at 0 km, as with Honda Plus: time and kilometres used before you buy then count against the plan. Work out the coverage left.

Then divide: total price ÷ years of coverage left.

The price of a Honda Plus plan varies with model year, term and kilometres. Honda’s own price list says the dealer may sell for less. To compare two Honda Plus quotes, check the term, the kilometres, the benefits, the mandatory fees included, the date and the service contract. The price in your quote includes all mandatory fees. In Quebec, only GST and QST are added. See how to compare Honda Plus quotes and why the price of a plan can vary.

Where to check a company before you buy

Before you buy any extended warranty, find out who is selling it and read the full contract. Consumer-protection offices and consumer organizations publish guidance you can read first. Ask for the company’s legal name, address and permit numbers, and keep copies.

Questions for the seller

  • Who is the seller? A legal name, an address and a way to reach the company in writing.
  • Where is the full contract? Ask to read the whole text before you pay.
  • What if you change your mind? Get the cancellation terms in writing.

The same checks apply to us. This site is operated by Qualité Performance Magog inc., doing business as Magog Honda, at 2400 rue Sherbrooke, Magog, Quebec J1X 4E6. See how to check an online seller and who we are.

When a third-party plan may make sense

Honda Plus is not available for every vehicle. If your Honda’s model year is not in Honda’s price list, or it is not a Canadian model, a third-party extended warranty may be an option. Use the same eight questions to compare whatever you are offered.

Three cases to consider:

  • An older vehicle. A model year that Honda’s price list does not name.
  • A model that is not Canadian. Honda’s price list covers Canadian models only.
  • A vehicle over 100,000 km. Above 100,000 km, Honda’s price list refers to a separate list for used vehicles. Ask your advisor what applies.

For a vehicle of another brand, the eight questions apply just the same.
